Hatton Cup and Dunkerque Trophy Finals
Sunday 31st August was a lovely late summer day at Charlotte Court and perfect for the "end of season party" for the Cup and Plate semi-finals.
The Cup semis were over fairly quickly as Brown Jug A saw off Brown Jug D without too much difficulty and Brown Jug Foragers took only a little longer to get their win over Brown Jug B.
It was rather different in the Plate matches but in the end the Natives showed that they are gaining in experience and after a great struggle beat Dover B 3-2, while the Herne Bay Herons used their usual guile to overcome Northwood.
At the lunch interval we enjoyed a buffet at Horse and Groom, and thanks go to Janice and Richard for their hospitality.
The Hatton Cup final was an interesting match and when BJA captain Julie Britton and playing partner Gary Widdison achieved a 13-0 win over rival captain Martin Bishop and his wife Aimee the match looked to be heading their way. But in the final doubles Lynn Small and John Velvick used all their considerable experience to get a 13-8 win over Max Boyce and Jason Flynn to take the match 3-2.
The Natives seem to thrive when they make life difficult for themselves and looked to be about to lose both triples until Robin Hardy produced the shot of the day to win 13-12. Two doubles games were shared fairly quickly and in the deciding game AyJay Keemer-Richards and Pat Taylor were leading comfortably 11-3 over Keith Mount and Phil Lyne. But the Natives don't know when they are beaten and they fought back to take the game 13-11 and the match 3-2 and retain the plate for the second year in succession. This was also a fitting farewell to team captain Keith Mount and wife Karen who are off to live in France in a few weeks time.
Thanks to all the participating players for making this a really great day, and thanks as well to all the spectators from other clubs who came along to watch and support. Look forward to doing it all again next year!
